Gozo Shioda was a student of Morihei Ueshiba who went on to start the Yoshinkan in the mid 1950s. The Yoshinkan style of aikido is distinguished by a heavy emphasis on basic technique and powerful, precise aikido. Shioda sensei's book explains the basic ideas of his style of aikido, beginning with kamae.

The acquisition of a stable, focused kamae, or stance, is the goal of every Yoshinkan practitioner. Nowhere have I seen a better explanation of its purpose than in Dynamic Aikido. Shioda sensei writes

"Two basic postures are used in aikido: migi hanmi ("right posture") and hidari hanmi ("left posture"). It is essential that they be studied thoroughly because not only do all aikido techniques originate from them, but also, once mastered, they induce the correct mental attitude."

Yoshinkan aikido is also known for its kihon dosa (basic exercises), a set of six exercises designed to drill aspects of power generation and body movement common to all basic technique. These movements are eloquently demonstrated and explained by Shioda sensei.

Next are descriptions and demonstrations of the core techniques of Yoshinkan aikido. The kihon waza (basic techniques) of the Yoshinkan consist of approximately 150 techniques, practiced standing and kneeling. Dynamic Aikido offers a representative sample of these techniques.

The book concludes with a chapter on self-defense applications in which Yoshinkan practitioners and models are attacked by an assortment of pickpockets, mashers, and muggers, all to no avail.

Lovers of technical detail will find it interesting to compare the technique shown in Dynamic Aikido with that of two other books. Total Aikido, also authored by Shioda sensei (along with his son Yasuhisa Shioda, also a high-ranking aikidoka), describes Yoshinkan aikido as currently practiced at Yoshinkan hombu dojo. Aikido: The Way of Harmony, displays the aikido of Rinjiro Shirata, who studied aikido at about the same time as Shioda sensei. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

In summary, a well-thumbed copy of Dynamic Aikido should on the bookshelf of every aikidoka.

Pros: Details!
Cons: It\'s been revised.

I affirm everything else that was stated.

I\'d like to add, however, that this, as a practitioner of a Yoshinkai style, is a Must-have!

Just today, the diagrams and directions gave me a new perspective on my technique...Powerful stuff!

I also like, as I flip between this book and \"Total Aikido,\" that you can see the evolution of these techniques. For the basic techniques, I kind of get a better idea of the lessons when I see what they changed.

You should own this book.
