Description:

This video looks at how you must position your body in relation to uke in order successfully complete a technique. This principle involves getting out of uke's tanden (power area) and putting uke into your tanden by facing uke from the side and/or behind. All aikido techniques accomplish this one way or another. Learning to recognize this relationship will improve your aikido practice. In fact this principle can be seen all forms of combat from the movement of troops or ships and tanks to air combat. It is a key to success in individual combat like boxing or wrestling matches.
The main program, "The 90 Degree and Behind Principle" is 42 minutes in length. Also included is another 70 minutes of extra segments on the same theme. Available from www.aikidoprinciples.com.

This is a fascinating review of proper positioning to maximize technique effectiveness. This may be the very best DVD on this subject that is readily available. The level of detail and depth of explanation is remarkable. This practical instruction should be helpful for students at all levels. I will use it as a manual for teaching these important principles.

Declaration: Hiroaki Izumi is both a former sensei of mine and a friend since we met in 1995.
The lesson from this is something Rocky was exploring when I was training with him at the (now gone) Regina Aikido Dojo between 1995 and 1997. Shortly before my shodan grading (Dec 06 and Jan 07) Rocky reminded me about this principle, and I watch for it (when I remember) at seminars, when shihan and when other sensei are instructing.
It's true - when you are "ninety degrees and behind" uke - the movements are much easier to do and more effective.
Rocky's presentation of the principle in this DVD explains and demonstrates how this works. One thing I noticed when training with Rocky - even though he's quite "old school" - as a (now) godan with a Ph.D. and years of experience teaching at universities, he knows how people learn and how to teach, and this comes through in the DVD.
But - As mentioned before - Rocky is a friend as well as a sensei. I could be biased - but I'm a professional coach, and recognise people who can help others learn - Izumi is one of those.
