Description: hickoryjo is a custom manufacturer of high-quality, reasonably-priced staffs for martial artists of all traditions.

Our staffs are unique because they are designed and manufactured with our customers’ needs and preferences in mind. Although many types of martial arts staffs are available from a wide range of manufacturers, we feel our products most successfully encompass these four cornerstones of quality:
best materials

Proven materials make the finest products! We use only the finest select-grade hickory for our products, because we’ve found it offers the best combination of weight, structural strength and toughness for martial arts applications. Each piece is carefully inspected for straight grain and freedom from defects.
superb function

These are not display pieces; they are meant to be used! Even after prolonged hard use, our products remain in excellent condition, cosmetically and structurally. Nothing short of malicious abuse will make them splinter, crack, split or break.
affordability

Efficient manufacturing is the key to reasonable prices! All of our products are made with modern woodworking equipment and fixtures, allowing us to produce cost-effective batches of consistent pieces while keeping the cost per piece affordable.
overall quality

We know what our customers are looking for and we deliver it! Constant quality-control checks at each stage of production assure consistent quality in our finished products. The natural durability and shatter-resistance of select hickory make our sticks extremely safe, and their visual and tactile qualities make them a joy to use, for even the most discerning customers.

Pros: Very reasonably piced for a jo made of hickory
Cons: 1/4 of the jo we oredered were warped, the factory finish is not acceptable \"out of the box\"

We ordered a set of 8 jo to make available for our dojo members for purchase. The price per jo with shipping came to $27.50 each
First the bad:
Of the 8 we received, 2 were warped. This is a my biggest complaint. Their website states they have high quality control, but with 25% of the product we ordered warped, this is something that needs to be improved. In fairness I have not contacted the manufacturer about this issue, and they may be willing to exchange the items.

The factory finish is definitely not acceptable for practice. Their website states that the jo are polished with leather and that this produces a surface that is ready for practice. In my opinion this is not true. The surface was very rough, and would most likely leave a small splinter or two in your hand if used as is. This is not a big issue for me personally as I always sand and refinish my weapons when I first get them, but if someone purchased one of these jo with the expectation of using it \"out of the box\" they would be disappointed.

Another complaint is that every jo had mars and rings left in the surface from the lathing process. Some of these mars took some significant sanding to remove, and there were several that I could not remove with fine grit sandpaper. I would have had to get really aggressive with heavy grit paper to remove some of the deeper mars, and this would have most likely meant getting the jo out of round. The dings and mars that were left after sanding with 220 grit do slide through the hand just fine, but aethetically leave a bit to be desired. The mars and dings that might detract a bit from the look really aren\'t that big of a deal though, since this is a weapon meant for contact practice and will develop marks over time anyway.

The good:
You can\'t beat the price for a jo made of hickory. Considering that these are cheaper that most white oak out there even, they are a great deal. The more you buy, the cheaper they get too. Overall these are a good option for a dojo to purchase \"in bulk\" for students to have a cheap alternative for a jo that will stand up to hard practice...as long as you don\'t mind putting in a little sweat equity by sanding and applying a finish.
