If "The Aikido Student Handbook" is the thing for newbies, this is the book I'd recommend they pick up next; it seems to be oriented toward the student with a week of practice up through 5th kyu (beyond that, look at Alan Drysdale's "Doing Aikido"). There are times that Homma Sensei's conversational tone is a tad too chatty, and his personal ruminations on why he offers classes the way he does didn't really interest this reader. There are a couple of things, however, that are really well done and had a significant impact on how I thought about aikido. The first is his discussion of the roles of nage and uke and the partnership between them (one chapter is titled "Your Partner Is Not A Dummy"). The second is that his simple explanations of basic techniques like kotegaeshi and shihonage rendered what were mysterious and complex sequences into understandable, related movement-based responses to situations. Not that it made them easier to do, it just made them less intimidating so that they seemed do-able. The import of this to a newbie should not be underestimated, which is why, with some reservations, I recommend the book.

Pros: Humourous while very informative, easy and entertaining to read.
Cons: Some times the flow gets slwed down wiht unnescesary information about Homma's classes.

Bought this book on Amazon for $2. I really enjoyed it. Love the bits of humor in there. Especially liked chapters such as It is natural to fall and No Mistakes. For me this book was a really good preparation for the experiences I was about to go through.
