The best instructional video on classical aikido ukemi
|
Cons:

|
Some years ago, Bruce and I exchanged video/DVD of our respective films on ukemi. Of mine, he said, laughing, "You don't care about looking good - you are just teaching how to survive." That's accurate.
Bruce's is far more. This video (and the introductory one before this) instruct on how to be a BRILLIANT uke - someone whose ukemi not only keeps one safe, but enables one to completely conform to the requirements of doing classical aikido. I do not mean by this that he teaches how to take a "dive." Rather, that you will learn as much about aikido technique TAKING ukemi (as Bruce suggests) as you will doing aikido techniques.
A couple of years ago, I watched a class of Kato Hiroshi, where Bruce worked with various individuals in the room, as well as taking ukemi for Kato Sensei. He was tireless, a testimony to both good training and efficiency in movement - and he was able to work with Kato as if he was a lifelong student, even though they had just met.
If you wish to master the kind of aikido that has been practiced in Japan post-war, of which a certain style of ukemi is essential, this video is the one. If you learn what is on these two tapes well, you will be able to walk into any Aikikai dojo in Japan (and many other styles as well) and not only be safe, but will stand out as someone that the instructor will desire to teach. I only hope that he makes a DVD as well.
