Description:
|
Conflict is an unavoidable aspect of living. The principles of aikido are uniquely suited to everyday conflict resolution because it is a martial art based on avoiding attack. Its nondefensive, prosocial stance offers new options for dealing with conflict and can help break habits such as bullying and intimidation.

This book is not exactly an Aikido manual per se. It really is about people management using Aikido principles. Something that's true of martial arts is that, it's not constrained to the dojo practice but should encompass our everyday lives.
The authors have put up a generalised system of encounters that you may have in your everyday life. In each encounter, the authors apply a particular response in accordance to the principle of Aikido, namely the triangle, circle and square analogies.
Quite useful if you can actually remember to do it right, when you're particularly stressed out or if its in the heat of the moment. But of course, once you're able to keep your centre in times of crisis, you're halfway there at knowing Aikido.
Not a bad book especially for people who are always getting abused by family and friends and don't want to hit back.

As stated in the other review, this book isn't really about Aikido. It's title might lead you to believe that it's applicable to all aspects of your life, but in reality it's kind of like a management resource. Some of the applications are brilliant, some are obvious, and there's a whole range in between. It's nice to think of Aikido in this manner, but I wish that it would have a more appropriate title. It's also quite dated, and the frequent use of the term Attacktics was kind of grating. It sounds like I am bashing on this book, but it's quite good at what it is. If you are not interested in how to apply some of your Aikido lessons to the business field, than look elsewhere. If you are, however, or you know nothing about Aikido than this could be a great book for you.

Pros:

Concept on centering and tactics.

Cons:

I found the strengths of the book to be its explanation on how to center, what it is, and emphasis on timing in tactics. Terry may not be proud of his use of the term \"attack-tics\" but he can be assured of passing on some value. If you can get, at least, that much from the book, I believe the rest of the tactics will follow naturally and subconsciously.
