Features dialogue from 13 American aikidoists, some of whom met the founder of aikido. The only book on aikido that I've ever seen with NO illustrations and NO photos.

Interesting if you'd like to know something about the early development of aikido in America, something of Americans' perceptions of aikido in Japan and of O'Sensei, or cultural problems between Japanese and American aikidoists. Useless for learning anything about aikido techniques.

Sometimes wordy, repetitive, and occasionally just plain lost in space! A good read if you're unemployed or you miss (or missed) the '60s.

Not all of those interviewed necessarily reflect sound aikido or martial arts principles, so beginners beware!

One "instructor" actually wastes his time pondering the morality of having sex with his students, one is completely unaffiliated with any aikido organization, while another admits to having received almost no aikido training, rationalizing that he feels qualified to teach aikido because he claims to have some sort of cosmic connection with O'Sensei.

Wow, now that really adds credibility to the art! And where do his students practice if they happen to move? I guess they just become white belts again or try to contact the Founder during an outer-body experience.

Pros: Interesting reading.
Cons:

Content is historical. Traces some aikido roots in America from the 60\'s through the 80\'s. It\'s intent isn\'t technical. The format is in interviews with multiple American aikidoka. Apparently, one of the interviews is of great controversy. The practitioner is capable of walking the walk and talking the talk with nine years experience in aiki-jujitsu, aikido\'s predecessor. The idea of dojo nonfraternization was presented as an example of not interfering in one\'s journey. The spiritual connection was through exercise of the same ascetic Shinto practices of O\'sensei.
