This series of Dvds are an updated version of Vhs video material. The techniques are demonstrated by Chiba Sensei 8th Dan Shihan. These cover basic waza up to and including first kyu. A short written commentary by Chiba Sensei introduces the aims and objectives of the set which is very interesting. The camera work captures the dynamic movement of Sensei from various angles. The standard of Ukemi is also very high , carried out by a number of Chiba Sensei's students. Body conditioning /Weapons work is also therein. This section is very impressive for the athleticism of the students taking part. It is not a basic dvd , one has to know a certain amount of Aikido waza to fully appreciate this set.I have tried to rate it to no avail. The product is excellent , and I rate it 10 /1o.It should be mandatory/required viewing for any serious student of Aikido. The dvd was shot at the Fairmount Dojo.As a point of interest most if not all the Uke are now highly experienced aikidoka in their own right.A few of them at the time of compiling the original set were Uchi Deshi at San Diego Aikikai .Most of them were my ex training partners.

Just finished reading this book. As a relative newbie to aikido I found this a very very insightful and helpful book in understanding a lot of the principles of aikido. Stenudd gets down to the details of what the real meaning behind the various words that describe this complex art. I especially found the sections on Basics and really getting into what exactly things like Irimi and Tenkan are about, not just the movement but the emotion that drives it. The various stages in training and a very detailed discussion on just what it means to be Uke and Nage. Too much detail to even go into and I will need to read it again in order to really digest it all. Excellent glossary of words. The best one I have yet found. Can also be found on his website. His writing style really helps the reader to feel and picture what he is trying to convey. Once I picked this book up it was very hard to put it back down.

I have all three of the Principles of Aiki DVD series, and recommend all of them. In them Ledyard Sensei presents not just the how, but the why. Also what to look for when watching demonstrations of techniques, and some pitfalls to avoid. I highly recommend these to anyone, but particularly to beginners (such as myself), because they help one learn how to learn, and present a picture of "where this is all going" that's very helpful. A huge boost to one's Aikido training.

The first half of the book is as interesting a martial arts story as you're likely to find. Starting with his childhood in Hawaii and building up to his eventually retirement from the military and life as a martial arts instructor in Charlston, Sc (where he still teaches today), it's almost like a story you'd get in a movie. He's literally traveled the world training with a who's who list of martial arts legends, not to mention testing that training many times through the years. As a fan of Aikido history it was very interesting to hear Suenaka Sensei's stories of O'sensei, Tohei sensei and all the things that took place in Aikido through the 60's and 70's. It really is a fascinating read and as another reviewer said, I had a hard time putting it down! It's crazy to think that there's someone like him teaching in South Carolina of all places! As for the technical section, I found it to be a good reference. I've never been fond of technical martial arts instruction books, but I doubt that's what Suenaka Sensei intended this to be. The technical reference does a good job of showing the finer points in what Suenaka Sensei considers the right way and wrong way to do some techniques. Considering his background and experience I doubt there are many who could argue against them.

I recommend this book set because it fills a niche, that of a reasonably complete catalogue of the patterns of movement that comprise the Aiki-Ken and Aiki-Jo of Saito Sensei. However, while the patterns of movement are broadly correct and thus serve well as a learning tool or memory aid, the actual form of Mr Weisgard and his partners is quite poor (clearly a subjective statement). The books production values are high.

Presented here are the all-too-often invisibilities of O'Sensei's and his son's dream for Aikido. The first time I read this book, when Ueshiba K. discusses how beautiful it is to him for students, including young people, to sit in a humble seiza, awaiting Sensei's instruction, I got chills. This book is about love and respect, two emotions refined with the vehicle of proper Aikido training. Aikido enacted properly is a beautiful thing, and the motivations of proper students and sensei are intrinsically rewarding at a level unparalleled. Drew

This book is about a man (Suenaka Sensei) who has trained with the best of the best in Karate, Judo, Kenpo Jujitsu, Kung fu and considers Aikido to be the martial art of choice and Osensei as the best martial artist that ever lived. I would encourage anyone who has an interest in what happened behind the scenes to Aikido and Hombu Dojo between Doshu and Tohei Sensei after O'Senseis death in 1969 to give this book a read. As far as the technical aspects of the book, I am quite bias. I am named in the acknowledgements and photos of me appear in the technical section of the book as well. It is the style of Aikido I practice and teach.

I picked this up on Amazon.com for $35. It said it was in VHS format but I was pleasantly surprised to receive a DVD instead. DVD menu breaks it down to sections so you can easily get to and view a specific fall. As a beginner and needing help whit Ukemi I found this a very helpful resource. Not only do we get to see the correct way to do front and back rolls and break falls but also he takes time to show the wrong positions of the body and explain why we would want to avoid them. I was able to learn a few things about my own mistakes in the first viewing that will help me to improve.

I've been wearing my Bujin womans gi top for several years now. It holds up beautifully - the fabric and the construction could not be better, and I say so as a seamstress. How to put this? As an older woman, I wish the shaping didn't assume 20 year old perkiness. And as a woman who prefers not to wear a t shirt over her sports bra, I wish there was a modesty tie at the bustline, where I've had to add one to every gi top I've ever worn.

Bought this book on Amazon for $2. I really enjoyed it. Love the bits of humor in there. Especially liked chapters such as It is natural to fall and No Mistakes. For me this book was a really good preparation for the experiences I was about to go through.
