Mine is the 800 gram version with the Tengu logos. It seems very well made and isn't quite as stiff as my housemate's Judo gi. It hasn't shrunk appreciably in three washings (cold water, air dry.) It seems to be very well made, all hems are nicely bound. The only down side is that it's HEAVY. I've had padded leather motorcycle jackets that didn't weigh this much! The bottoms were about the right length, and double layered from above the knees nearly to the hem, but clearly made for someone MUCH larger than I am. I'm not skinny, at 5'11" & 165lb, but I have to gather up about a foot of extra material to keep 'em up. The quality of the construction with all nicely finished seams, makes the proposition of taking them up rather daunting, so I'll put up with it.

This is an awsome product that will last quite a while and won't tear out. However, it is quite expensive.

Mine is the 800g Sashiko Ori rice grain fabric. It is remarkably stout, and I've owned motorcycle jackets which aren't as heavy. I've washed it four or five times, and it hasn't shrunk much, 'though I haven't subjected it to the dryer.

I recommend this as a handy guide to see basic techniques executed, as well as finding the differences between various techniques explained. You can find a preview of this book through amazon or through google: http://amzn.com/1468092189 http://books.google.com/books?id=-dVoY805xHYC&lpg=PP1&dq=aikido%20techniques%20handbook&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q=aikido%20techniques%20handbook&f=false

This DVD presents the Iwama aiki ken weapons system, that was passed down by the founder to M. Saito sensei. It includes the 7 suburi, ki musubi no tachi, and the five kumi tachi plus sword and body variations. It does not however include the ken tai jo (sword vs staff) techniques. Saito sensei power and grace with the ken is seen throught this DVD adn he explains the movements of the ken with simple to use language and precise explanations. I would deffinately recomend this DVD to anyone interested i learning the founders original teachings of Aiki ken.

This book is a must for the new Aikido student. It provides key insight into etiquette, Japanese language use, and the fundamental philosophies that govern everyday life in the Aikido Dojo. I seriously recommend this book for people thinking about joining, or have just begun their practice in Aikido.

My dojo has a lot of weapons from California S&P on our weapons rack. Several months ago, as I prepared to attend my first weekend weapons seminar, my sensei told me that he thought this particular bokken would be a good fit for me. It turns out he was right and I have grown particularly fond of it. Sensei was about to place an order and I decided it was time to purchase my own bokken after two years of training. The timing worked out wonderfully because the owner of the bokken I was using (his son) is taking it with him back to college. This bokken is imported from Japan and is made of white oak. It is approximately 40 in length and is a bit on the lighter side for a bokken. If you prefer to use a heavier bokken, this may not be for you. Despite the lighter weight, this bokken can hold its own against a heavier weighted bokken during partner exercises and forms. If you want a tsuba on this particular bokken, you will have to buy a tsuba and two rubber stoppers. The tsuka is no thicker then the blade, so the tsuba does not butt up against the wider tsuka, hence needing two stoppers instead of one. The price of the bokken (as of 12/23/10) is a little over $60. In my opinion, it is a nice midrange bokken and is great for beginners or advanced students alike. People in my dojo seem to be pleased with the weapons (bokken & jo) they have purchased from this retailer and often purchase from them again when they want a new weapon.

I bought a hand made bokken from Kingfisher several years ago and was hugely disappointed. The website and reputation all point to superb quality and practical weapons. Unfortunately the bokken was far too light and thus very poorly balanced. The grain is parallel yet not tight giving the bokken a very porous feel. Kingfisher was a huge disappointment and I recommend you stay clear.

This is the first time I have used ninecircles and was pleasantly surprised. This is the first time I have come across such quality in the UK. The Bokken are very well balanced. The grain is tight and parallel. Finally at approx 20 per bokken you are geeting a very good deal. I have paid five times this for very poor bokkens. If you are in the UK they are a must.

This book describes the randori practice system from basics up to application. There are a lot of photographs with close-ups where necessary to highlight points. The descriptions of techniques are very detailed. Although the scope of the book is the development of randori skills, these skills are also essential for kata practice. The book emphasises the correct attitude towards aikido and the competitive side which is often misunderstood. The book covers almost all of the content for the Japan Aikido Association kyu syllabus and part of low dan grade syllabus. I would recommend this book, I think that everyone would find it informative.
