This article entitled "Getting a Black Belt in Creativity" briefly describes Mark Bradford's research into connecting aikido and the design process. From the article: “You imagine having a brainstorm with all the idea flying out from one central point,” he says. “That is the same as an aikido situation - jiyuwaza - which features an individual defending themselves against multiple attackers. It's really trying to take the principals of aikido and applying them to the creative flow.”

This YouTube video clip entitled "Aite Do Teatr" is a trailer for an upcoming dance/butoh performance in Warsaw. The clip seems to contain some aikido techniques including seated kokyu dosa, iriminage, and nikyo amidst its interpretive, artistic portions.

Event: Aikido Demonstrations at SportsFest in Allentown, PA, 7/24-7/27

SportsFest (www.sportsfest.org) is the fourth weekend in July -- Thursday the 24th through Sunday the 27th. There are martial arts demonstrations (including at least two different Aikido schools) beginning at Noon, on Saturday July 26th. Several of the martial arts schools and vendors will also have booths setup throughout SportsFest.

Here is a YouTube video entitled "Classical Aikido Kototama". According to its description, "This clip was made during the annual Classical Aikido Shugyo 2006 in Maastricht, The Netherlands. In honour of O' Sensei founder of aikido and Rinjiro Shirata Sensei. It shows aikido kototama or sound meditation performed by John Stevens Sensei. Many thanks for everything Sensei!"

Seminar: 15 Years Anniversary of Aikido in Malta, 6/20-6/22

A seminar is being organised to celebrate the 15 years of Aikido in Malta. The seminar will be lead by Tamburelli sensei (5th Dan) at the Yamato Dojo. The 2 day seminar spread on 3 days includes master demonstration of various Aikido aspects.

Aikido Kenkyukai Pennsylvania welcomes back Kirisawa Naoki Sensei,5th dan,from Yokohama, Japan, for an Obon Holiday Seminar. Training will be all day Sunday, Aug. 10 and Monday and Tuesday evenings, Aug.11 & 12. The cost will be $100 for all 3 days. Further details to follow. Everyone is warmly invited to join us for a great time!

Kenneth Cottier Sensei Passes Away

Kenneth Cottier sensei, 7th dan aikikai, passed away early this morning (UK time). He had been diagnosed with lung cancer and was in a hospice in Clatterbridge in Chesire, England, near his home. According to the Hong Kong Aikido Association website, "Mr. Kenneth Cottier was a student of the Founder of Aikido, from the early 1960's and continued to live and train in Japan for almost 25 years. Cottier Sensei was instrumental in forming the Hong Kong Aikido Association in 1971, he represents the British Aikido Federation, the Superior Council of the International Aikido Federation and Founder of Hong Kong Aikido Association. Sensei was awarded the tilte of Shihan by Aikikai Hombu Dojo on 2002." My condolences go out to his family, friends, and loved ones.
