Article: "Aikido a martial art with extra emphasis on art"
Posted 5/06/2011 5:25pm [from Jun Akiyama]

This article entitled "Aikido a martial art with extra emphasis on art" highlights a seminar that Cyndy Hayashi sensei and Michael Friedl sensei recently taught in Bruderheim, Alberta in Canada. From the article: "The thing is it's a noncompetitive activity, it's more of a personal transition," she said. "The art fits you, it's not about you fitting the art." That makes Aikido well suited for just about anybody because it has applications in life beyond being a martial art, she added. "One of my students is in a wheelchair and holds a third-degree black belt. I have another student who is an 80-year-old woman. One day while she was hiking she fell and immediately did a forward roll because Aikido teaches that most times you are not going to hurt yourself if you do a forward roll. Anybody else at that age would likely have hurt themselves trying to block that fall by extending their arms."
