Styles and Organizations in Aikido

There are many different styles and organizations in aikido, none of which are "superior" or "inferior." Rather, they are all different approaches to teaching and learning the broad and deep art that is aikido. Here is a quick article that may help you choose a dojo.

With that said, here are pointers toward some organizations and styles.

Cross-style organisational bodies

The following organisations form 'umbrella' organisations who represent all styles of Aikido.

  • BAB - British Aikido Board

Aikikai

The following organizations fall within the Aikikai family of aikido.

  • AAA - Aikido Association of America
  • AAT - Aikido Association of Thailand
  • AKI - Aikido Kenkyukai International
  • ASU - Aikido Schools of Ueshiba
  • AWA - Aikido World Alliance
  • AikikaiAustralia - Aiki-kai Australia
  • BSJ - Ban Sen Juku
  • Birankai
  • BAF - British Aikido Federation
  • CAA - California Aikido Association
  • CAF - Canadian Aikido Federation
  • GHAAN - Groupe Historique Aikido André Nocquet (France)
  • IAA - Israeli Aikido Association (Aikikai)
  • KAF - Korea Aikido Federation
  • PAF - Pacific Aikido Federation
  • TAA - Takemusu Aikido Association

Yoshinkan

The following organizations fall within the Yoshinkan family of aikido.

Iwama Ryu

The following organizations fall within the Iwama family of aikido.

Ki Society/Ki no Kenkyu Kai

The following organizations fall within the Ki Society/Ki no Kenkyukai family of aikido. They are all separate organizations and do not belong to the Ki Society.

Shodokan (aka Tomiki)

The following organizations fall within the Tomiki family of aikido.

Yoseikan

The following organizations fall within the Yoseikan family of aikido.

  • IYBF - International Yoseikan Budo Federation
