According to the central figure in this painting, Don Williams (sandan, Aikido Schools of Ueshiba; shodan Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū Iaijutsu), "Aikido and Iaijutsu both deal with knowing your own body, trusting your tools and interacting with conflict to bring harmony to life."
Sword smith David Goldberg (godan, ASU; yondan, Iaido North American San Shin Kai) says, "Aikido creates the image of movement while still, as Iaido creates the image of stillness while moving."
Clearly, Iaido/Iaijutsu and Aikido are related. Since O'Sensei's spirit has been felt by many Aikidoka, his ever-growing beard is a symbol of his continuance.

The Iaijutsu school of which Don is a member is Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu. There are long vowels in the name, but they did not copy and paste properly in the painting summary.

I don't know, he's got a pretty sharp widow's peak ;-) Don's is actually not so pronounced, but remember this is my third attempt ever at a realistic face. And Don, there's nothing wrong with "healthy narcissism" as far as I'm concerned ;-)

Including O'Sensei's shomen in this painting, which took microsurgical precision and the smallest two brushes I own, Don's face is actually the fourth I have painted while going for realism. I am proud of my work here. I couldn't have painted it without Don letting me use an incredible photo of his for guidance. I told him I would keep the original, and that he would have carte blanche to offer as many prints as he would like for sale. The painting is 24x36" (quite large), so a quality canvas Giclee print of that size is pricey, especially when including shipping. Getting to know Don mainly on the mat of my first dojo, I have never felt anything but love from him. Sometimes guys with incredible muscular strength power-trip on those weaker in that area. In two years, I didn't see him do that one single time. A black belt in many, many martial arts from all different countries of origin, Don is one of the most amazing persons I have known. He might not be famous per se, but if he does offer prints, it is one to buy. The painting itself took 80-90 hours, and whether to have a piece with Don, the painting itself, or a combination of both, it is worth every penny. /end public relations comment.
