What Makes A Dojo?

Myself and a few other students were talking about this prior to a lesson the other week.

In the absence of being in a purpose built Dojo, what make a windy church hall or a sports hall into a dojo? Is it the students, O Sensei picture on the wall or something else?

Your thoughts please.

Re: What Makes A Dojo?

Mats come in handy! Until we put ours down every class, we are in a ballet studio with a picture of OSensei on the wall. When the mats are down we are in the dojo.
We always bow when we enter, mats or not.

Re: What Makes A Dojo?

All of the places I practice are multi use rooms, so I agree the sensei and the students doing aikido make it a dojo. Since the group itself has a name (shiseikan) I think of the group as the dojo, not necessarily the place. At the city hall we don't even have tatami.

Re: What Makes A Dojo?

Mats do help a lot. I have been in a dojo that was moving to a new location. For me it did not feel quite like a dojo until Osensei was watching. Of course without the students you just have a picture.

Did you ask any of the Senior students or instructors?

Bryan,

You initiated the discussion it was after we spoke about etiquette. DJ said it was O Sensei's picture and Dennis said it was the students.

See you next week!

I'm not so sure it's that easy an answer, but, a dojo is just a place to train. You don't need a picture of O Sensei, you don't necessarily need mats, although they are definately preferable to me when practicing nage waza .

However, the atmosphere in the dojo is maybe a different question? Largely this is down to the students, but the instructor(s) have a key role to play. As has been mentioned above, it's all about desire and commitment to training. Why don't you come down tonight?

A dojo is made by deciding space X is now a dojo, its permanence is determined by the commitment of the people using it.
