Keep healthy i.e.:
- do regular light exercise (get into a habit i.e. 15 minutes EVERY morning)
- cut down on fats and eating before bed time
- get sufficient sleep
- eat sufficient fruit and vegetables

Also, due to our high dairy/wheat content diet our blood often becomes more alkaline, which is not optimal for our immune system. To compensate for these (if you can't bear to reduce them!) try apple cider vinegar from a health food store. A teaspoon a day should set you right within a week (I tried this a couple of years ago when I was ill for about 2 months and it worked really well). Of course, Vit C is also useful.

Cold and flu tablets are not good for your liver, and usually just treat the symptoms.

Re: What do you do when your sick?

P.S. I don't know about Australia, but general practitioners (GPs) in the UK are useless. Their standard reply falls in to 3 categories:
1. take some drugs to ease the pain/symptoms
2. if you are injured, rest it for 8-10 weeks
3. refer you to a specialist

I blame poor GPs for a persistant knee problem which I had for years because they told me to rest it, whereas what I needed to do was consistently exercise it. Also a nursing friend of mine was dismayed by the allergy sufferers in a hospital she was working in who were being treated with creams for the symptoms of their allergies, instead of changing their diet! If you do go to a GP, go informed and be prepared to argue the point with them - they'll probably send you to a specialist who actually knows what they are talking about, and unlike GPs, they tend to keep up with more recent research.

I can guarantee that if you just take the advice of a GP they'll just prescribe a drug.

Re: What do you do when your sick?

Drink large amounts of water. Get extra sleep. If you have chills, eat warming foods like soups. Legumes are warming foods, so a lentil or bean soup would be great. If you have a fever or are just throwing the blankets off, eat cooling foods like raw vegetables and fruits, or if you must have them cooked, have them steamed. Yogurt is good, too.

IMHO, rest, get plenty of liquids, and get out of the way, the body knows how to heal itself.

Once you can, check your nutrition and stress level for why your immune system may be down and you get sick easily.

Re: What do you do when your sick?

It might sound funny and is probably contrary to most professional advice.
When I have a flu and/or light fever I go to aikido classes and sweat heavily. I take a warm shower or bath afterwords and I feel much better then.

I just don't like ukemi, wwhen I have a head-ache.

When I was young, nearly 18yo, I even went to a high level karate seminar with high temperature and bad feeling. I just left classes half an hour earlier - 3.5h instead of 4 - and took a long hot shower.

But now I am older and wouldn't do that. But still I feel much better after training. It starts a bit ucoordinated but aftre a while my head gets free. Then I take one day rest and the nday after the next I take again some classes, and usually I am quite well there after.

Best regards Dirk

Sleep.
I know there's so much stuff that has to get done, but quit trying to be a hero. Find a cool, dark, quiet place and crash hard.

And how many people did you infect while you trained with them?

What Lynn says.

However, for jet lag, the recovery (non-contagious) part of flu or cold, basically when the body is not quite right a good sweat does wonders.
