Re: Poll: How often does your aikido instructor discuss the philosophy of aikido during class?

Well, I can see that discussion was the wrong word to describe the bits of information that are handed down from our sensei to us on occasion. Short and sweet. Talking is certainly not something we do a great deal of on the mat other than for feedback or instruction.

I do love my little slice of mat time as well and leave ou all to carry on this chat.

Hope to meet you all on a mat some day,

Re: Poll: How often does your aikido instructor discuss the philosophy of aikido during class?

I'm willing to look foolish on the mat to learn, so I am willing to put thoughts out there on the web and have those kicked around too.

Goal is learning through sharing, occasional bloody noses for me, and hopefully I don't step on the yudansha's toes too much.

I love philosophy, almost as much as I love beer! Is it 10 am yet?

Re: Poll: How often does your aikido instructor discuss the philosophy of aikido during class?

I sometimes think all this talking about and expressing the ideas of aikido during class is a little counterproductive. It does lead to more "oh, that's what sensei means!" moments, but also distracts from the physical practice, and what's more, you don't get that understanding that comes from doing. Understanding that comes from being told is different from understanding that comes from really discovering for yourself that something is true. Furthermore, the ideal state of mind for doing aikido is, apparently, that state of calm and wordless action that can also be achieved by crawling around in the bushes birdwatching for four days. I'm not sure all this talking is going to help people get there.. although anything that speeds up the process is probably good...
