I have just reread Aikido Shugyo and this part may be applicable...

In one of the chapters, Kancho Shioda mentioned that one should not worry about those whose hands are rough and bruised and brash. It is those whose hands are smooth and silent that worries him. Go figure? Maybe we should check opponents' hands before engaging?

Actually my daughter does and the serious martial artist didn't take a jo from her. He took if from her sweet friend.

I hate the term 'martial artist'. Anyone who calls themselves a'serious martial artist' obviously isnt...

Thanks. I wish I could say I kept my center and handled him from wisdom. Instead, I was flabbergasted. I think pointed may have been good.

Once we had a guy drive up as we were finishing class. He asked if he could show our class a demonstration of the martial art he does. All was going well until uke threw the wrong attack and he slapped uke hard--very hard--across the face.

Sensei said you have to be careful when choosing a dojo because people are attracted to martial arts for all kinds of reasons.

Thanx for an excellent article.
I work with a young fellow, who upon finding out that I was a shodan in Aikido, told me that he was a 7th degree black belt. As a fellow martial artist I excitedly asked in which martial art he had attained that high rank. "I can't remember the name.", he said. I was speachless
