Re: AIKI : the movie

Decent movie, has kind of a Rocky plot. Down and out kid (ex boxer, by the way) finds redemption in Aiki-jujitsu. A little silly sometimes, but a decent film. Interesting look a the life of the handicapped in Japan.....

Re: AIKI : the movie

Did you all know that the movie is loosely based on the true life story of Ole Kingston?

Re: AIKI : the movie

I just saw the movie. It was a decent movie. It has the feeling of the Karate Kid movie and is a bit "campy" at times but I liked the portrayals of Daito ryu Aikijujutsu Roppokai. The movie has a subtitles feature and amazingly, did play on my Magnavox DVD player. I especially liked the added 40 minute feature on the making of the movie where it shows Ole Kingston doing techniques in his wheelchair and it also has scenes of Soshi Seigo Okamoto teaching the actors Aikijujutsu for the movie.

Re: AIKI : the movie

I reckon they should make an American version of it. Get Steven Seagal to play the role of the aikido instructor.

Jim R. was the person who lent it to me! I got it after Jaideep saw it so I guess we'll put you in the line! I'm sure we can pass it on to you. I decided to buy the movie for myself after I saw it. In the movie, they have a scene where the Aikijujutsu group is having a meal after class and the character that plays Okamoto sensei tells a joke about how to be strong in Aikijujutsu. It was a strange feeling seeing that because I heard Okamoto sensei tell the same joke to us at the seminar in Fort Worth. Even the context of the joke was the same so it was clear to me that he had a large part in the making of the movie.

I have been saying that same thing for years. The best argument for that may be that Seagal himself could probably push it through with a production company but with the recent numbers on some of his movies, he may not have the clout anymore.
Strangely enough, the real true life modern parallel to the Karate Kid story lies again in Aikijujutsu with the Don Angier story.
