I need a dojo recommendation for L.A.

Hi all,

I'm going to be in LA for a few months on a work assignment, and I'd like to keep up my training. Are there any recommendations for a dojo/instructor in Los Angeles? I'm training in Aikikai and I'd trained very briefly at Berkeley Aikikai.

thanks!

L.A. is a big place... can you be more specific re: the area in which you will be staying?

Well, I stay out in Malibu, but I will be working in Mid-Wilshire. Any (good) place in between would be great!

thank you

Re: I need a dojo recommendation for L.A.

Well, there are a few Aikikai dojos in the San Fernando Valley but if you're doing the Malibu-LA Corridor migration, you may want to use the dojo search on this site and first do a search for California and then do a page search for Santa Monica and Los Angeles in the listing that comes up... sorry my experience is with the S.F. Valley dojos... you may have to branch out of Aikikai to practice at a dojo between home and work.

Re: I need a dojo recommendation for L.A.

Well, I just came across a possible candidate:

Venice Aikido Club
12448 Braddock Drive; Los Angeles, CA 90066
Instructors: Sarah Falsey, 5th dan
Phone: (310) 370-7240
Schedule: MTh 5:45-7:15pm; Sa 7-9am
E-mail: bjshibata@earthlink.net
URL: http://home.earthlink.net/~bjshibata
Affiliation: Aikido SeiShinkai, USA; Aikikai Foundation

You'll be passing just by Venice on your way home... this may be a consideration. No experience with this dojo though...

If in the Wilshire district, you might consider Jacques Payet of the Yoshinkan
http://www.jacquespayet.com. Can't go wrong with him being a direct student
of Yoshinkan founder Gozo Shioda.

Steven,

Payet Sensei is moving back to Japan. He was at my dojo on Saturday night (Surprise!) and expects to be in Kyoto from April 1st.

His dojo is being taken over (I believe) by David Fryburger, who did the 1993-1994 Senshusei course...and was my partner for most of the year.

Which means it will still be a good dojo, especially if Payet Sensei entrusted it to him. Personally, I can't say enough good things about David.

cheers,

--Michael

I think William Hazen, who post on the Aikido Journal forum under Aikibu2, lives and trains in Malibu, Check it out.

Have you done a Dojo search on AikiWeb and Aikido Jorunal?

We are in Westmintser, Orange County. Too far.

Hi Michael,

I did not know this. Thanks for the information. I'll have to contact Payet Sensei for sure. David ran a dojo for some time in New York and I did know he was in SoCal. Glad to know the dojo will be in good hands.

Cheers ...

Re: I need a dojo recommendation for L.A.

I would suggest going with the Venice dojo as my aikido stems from the same source as their's.

I know, or at least know of, most of the aiki arts in Southern California. Just about all of them; I can honestly recommend. However, not every dojo is for every person. Maybe some more information such as: hard or soft aikido, weapons intensive or weapons light, female heavy dojo or male heavy dojo, shihan preference?

Thanks for responding,

I'm not sure what exactly I'm looking for. I'm pretty open. As long as the teacher knows what he's doing, and the students are pretty open and there aren't too many hot-headed showboats, I'm good. I trained Yoshinkan style for a while, and liked how vocal and interactive the class was, compared to Aikikai. But, I can do either one.

I've never done weapons, so no real preference there. Again, I'm open to anything.

Thanks!

See if you can get in touch with Nathan Scott, one of Obata Sensei's seniors. He should be in the LA area somewhere...though I don't know that he takes short term students, I'd definately look him up if I was in that area. Obata Sensei used to be in the yoshinkan, so you'll find quite a few similarities, I'm sure. You could also get some exposure to shinkendo while you're at it...

Re: I need a dojo recommendation for L.A.

Most of the ones listed are too far for convenience. The closer the better, most of the time... Also some of the ones listed are a little costly, in my personal opinion. That is why I am going to suggest

    Dojo Westlake Village Aikido
Distance: 10 miles (North of Malibu, CA)
Address: 30845 Thousand Oaks Blvd; Westlake Village, CA 91361 (Map)
    Country: United States
    Instructors: David Alexander, 6th dan
    Phone: (818) 707-0066
    E-mail: Christopher Field <itto0gami@mac.com>
    URL: http://www.iwama-aikido.com
    Style: Iwama

This is my honest suggestion. I have nearly nothing to do with that dojo, other then having trained with a few of it students. It is a solid dojo that technically should not be too far off, has aiki weapons, and has good people.
