Another noob question on hakama...

I am sure this question has been addressed many time but I could not find it, so bear with me...

Before putting on the hakama, do you put on your gi belt (brown or black belt)? Or is the belt eliminated for the ties that come with the hakama?

Also, please include a link where I can get the names of the parts of a hakama.

Gi belt helps hold the hakama on the body.

It is easier with the belt. I have seen it done without the belt, but it tends to slip.

Don't know the parts of the hakama, only the plate in the back is called the "koshiita" I believe, and I probably spelled that wrong. Nope, that's right, I looked it up. That part goes in the back. So that's all I know....front, back, top, bottom. Every time I put my hakama on it reminds me of when I used to saddle a horses. Not saying I'm fat, just that it ties the same...kind of...never mind. ;-)

I know when I was first starting out in aikido, I was terribly intimdated by my instructor and classmates because they were all in aikido for years and I was the only white belt at the time. I felt like any question I could ask was "stupid" or "dumb" and just a waste of their time. Wrong! EVERYONE has these questions and really good aikidoka will be more than happy to answer any question you might have, so long as you ASK it.

Remember, we've all been rookies in something at one point. Besides, no two instructors or sensei will ever be the same and many have their own idea of how things should be done... so they are your best source for answers to the questions you come up with.

Hakama ties do not eliminate belt. The way to tie hakama that I know invloves moving the ties under gi in several places. If there is no gi, you can not do that do you?

Those "TIES" that everyone refers to, are called "HIMO"
Depending on what ryu you are in, the himo can be tucked out of the way(as for kendo), some ryu indicate ok to make a nice bow in the back (by the koshita) or a nice bow in the front fro some aikido and iaido ryu.

there is no significence on color of the himo or hak color in most ryu-I have been to IAIDO classes where everyone wore a white hak...and i showed up in all black- no-one poo-poo'ed
