Exclamation returning to the mat

After a waaaay to long absence from the dojo I'm limping my way back. I have gotten so incredibly out of shape I'm disgusted with myself ! My good friend & dive buddy from work is a Shodan in karate & encouraged my to attend a class with him. I was pathetic! Couldn't make it past the first hour before limping to the sidelines! How did I become such a slob?!? Memories of high school wrestling & rugby are quickly fading, I have transformed into a thirty something blubber-boy! For three days after the session with Dave at his dojo, I was unable to even raise my arms above my head!!! I have recovered since & I have to say the humiliation was worth it because I feel great, long hibernating muscles were brought back to life & want more abuse. Wish me luck & don't let this happen to you!

Hi, Todd.
I can't imagine taking a long break from training and then being able to just jump onto the mats and train for an hour. Srength and stamina both need to be slowly brought back up to speed....You can do it! Let us know how it goes as you progress.

Good article, I've found my main complaint other than trying desperatly to remember where I put my cardiovascular system is generalized stiffness. We have weapons practice tomorrow morning & my plan is to hit the gym prior to class for a pre-warm up warm up. If I am loose & warm enough for practice I shouldn't hurt myself, providing I pace myself. .
Anyone have some advice on speeding up the process?

It sounds like you already know this...but just in case...Do make sure that your "warm up" is indeed a warm up and not, as in many aikido dojos, a stretching session. The warming up is gross movements (biking, walking, jumping rope, doing aikido footwork and exercises, jumping jacks, etc) that literally raise the muscles temperature, after which they are ready to do training and be stretched.
