Irimi Nage

During Irimi Nage Is it correct to turn your entire body into the uke or just put your arm out and let the uke run into it? I have been taught both ways and told both ways are right and wrong.

I apologize if this question is not very clear.

Re: Irimi Nage

Either way is acceptable. I can't say that either are wrong. So long as when you throw the uke you have your balance and the uke is off balance then it is correct.

I think though by putting your whole body into the technique it will be more effective though.

Just my opinion.

Re: Irimi Nage

I agree with Aleksey. Do it the way the instructor shows it. Take the feedback from the instructor and listen to him. I have seen this technique done so many different ways by so many different people. Some people hold the shoulder and brace the arm around their body as to cause an arm bar effect, others lightly touch you at all, while others pull you as hard as they can. Do each work? Sure. I suppose this is the part where making the art your own comes in as well. Do it the way the instructor tells you, but make the art your own. Make it comfortable to you so that it will become natural and flowing. Take care and good luck.

Re: Irimi Nage

In my experience and in my dojo, we teach that there is no wrong, just different. If the art is effective, then it's being done correctly. I agree with the previous posts saying do it as the instructor shows. Think of the instructor's class like a meal that he or she has prepared for you. Take a little of everything offered, taste it, if you like it feel free to take more, and if you don't like it wait until later to spit it out.
