Question Catching a cold?

The last time I came down with a cold I called my partners from the previous night (there were only two) and advised them to take lots of vitamins. I stayed away from the dojo for about 10 days after I was sure I was sick. I waited until I wasn't coughing anymore. No one else got sick.
Was this excessive or just good manners? What do you do?

Not everyone has such good manners, so remember to wash your hands well (including the backs and wrists) after class -- and don't be eating or touching your eyes until you do. This has been a message from your mother.

Re: Catching a cold?

I remember being astonished at the results of the poll this past October when 383 people said yes they'd go to class with a cold and 249 said they wouldn't. I don't go to class if I'm sick, but other people definitely do and it ... makes me sick!

Dan, your warning your partners was amazingly polite. I don't think I know anyone who would have gone that far, but I'd be very grateful if someone did that for me. As for how long to stay away, I'd ask my doctor if I wasn't sure how long I'd be contagious.

http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mcold.html

" the common cold is 'contagious' between 24 hours before onset of symptoms until 5 days after onset."

That is of course not the last word, but it is at least an informed opinion. I've seen other sources that said 3-4 days, and one that said "3 days to 3 weeks"; I'm definitely not polite enough to stay off the mat for 3 weeks. Anyway, the real kicker is "24 hours before onset of symptoms". So again, don't count on people's politeness, since they may not even know they're sick.
