Re: Weight of iaito swords
To some extent, it depends on your size and age. An 800 gm sword is good for a beginner, esp one of small stature because it is light and easy to move. On the other hand it may lack conviction in the hands of a beginner. A heavier sword will, in time, swing truer once your muscles are tuned up. If you now have a 1Kgm sword, you might want to stick with it a while. Do a couple hundred swings a day and see if it doesn't feel better to you in a couple of months. I think the average iaito are between 800 and 1000 gms but a dotanuki style will be 1200 gms, which can wear out anybody in a short time. I'm 185 lbs and 5' 11" and use an 850 gendaito for iaido, but I'm 63 years old. Most of my younger practice partners like swinging my sword. My cutting sword is over 1000gms and tip-heavy. Best wishes, Rich
