LASIK/RK/eye surgeries and aikido?

Greetings all,

Has anyone here had LASIK/RK/vision improvement surgery? I would like to know when you got it, how you handled returning to train, and if there are any special ongoing considerations/effects that might affect aikido training afterwards. Right now, I wear thick glasses or contacts and hate messing with them, but am concerned about possible risks of doing surgery that makes the lenses thinner.

Will my eyeballs pop if I take a good shomen to the head? just kidding, but definitely wanting feedback.

I know some in our dojo who have done it, and love it. MikeE's wife had it done recently and can see just fine.

The Simpsons did a bit on this when Bart (a future 'flashback') asked old Flanders for money. Flanders shows up with black circle-frame glasses, says he's blind, thanks to the laser surgery (I think he said God was upset or something).

I just want to stress that you choose a really great doctor to do the surgery - and be aware that things can go wrong. I know of two people whose surgeries did not turn out happily, my uncle and my girlfriend. She has more difficulty now than before the surgery, at least then she could see with glasses, now she says it's like looking through crinkled saran wrap.

I had it done at the University of Washington Medical Center a few years ago and am very happy with the results.

I can see distance well enough to drive AND don't need reading glasses anymore,either.

Linda is right- it all depends on who does it.

I wore goggles in class for a few months after so noone would poke a finger in my eyes.
