Freaky! one-eyed training

Does anyone have any suggestions for training tips for someone with extremely poor vision in one eye (thus with almost no depth perception)? This is especially an issue with weapons training, where the consequences of mistakinging ma-ai are more painful.

Moving your head from side to side may help. The brain interprets depth perception from triangulation from the two eyes. Perhaps moving your head from side to side can help simulate having two good eyes, and help. I might be wrong. Maybe a call to the opthamologist might result in a better answer than this.

Joan,

There is an interview on the Aikido Journal website you should look at. Stanley Pranin interviewed Yukiyoshi Takamura, a teacher of Shindo Yoshin-ryu jujutsu. Takamura talks about one of his teachers, Matsuhiro Namishiro. Namishiro Sensei was blind in one eye and would actually use it to his advantage. The interview may not help you in a technical way, but it may inspire you. It sure inspired me.

To clarify, the fellow to whom I am referring is blind in one eye, with no hope of external visual correction. His aikido is wonderful. However, he is apprehensive about weapons training since he has a hard time figuring out how long the stick is. I have sent him the address of the interview and the suggestion to triangulate by moving his head--thanks for the input.
