Entering to strike.

Just using Irimi foot work, do you think it would be possible to enter and just strike the face with Shomen? Was thinking about it today in Aikido, just wondered what you peeps thought.

Shomen ate isn't a strike, it's a throw.

Its both, it can be quite soft and 'blendy', or it can be very 'strikey' indeed.

We do the same thing in ASU and practice it both as a strike and as a throw. We also practice the same idea using bokken.

If someone is swinging a baseball bat or some such motion and you simply drop into them with shomen ate at their full backswing then they will feel like they hit a wall (depending on their level of committment). However, you can also do shomen ate very "easily" that can end in more of a "side topple" onto the attacking side. It all depends on how aggressive the attack is and how you feel about dealing with it.
