In one jujutsu school I had the good fortune to train in, there was an expression "to stand in the shadow" of your opponent. In very simple terms, if you "stand in the shadow" your standing where your opponent once stood, or in a sense moving into the shadowed area that was created by the sun where he once stood. The idea centers around upseting your opponent's kuzushi (balance) thereby making it easier to throw him or execute another technique.
