hello from Tennessee

Hi!
My name is Mike, I would have posted here earlier but I never noticed it before. The arts that i have studied are TKD (who hasen't?) Aikido (I think my instructor just learned from books and videos and was a fraud so I don't know if you can count that one) Bujinkan Taijutsu (you know, the "Ninjas") and a bit of BJJ/submission wrestling. I'm hoping to start Aikido training again soon but since I live in an area that is an Aiki desert it is kind of hard. I live between Nashville and Memphis. Both of the cities have schools but it is too far for me to travel on a regular basis. The Aikido training I did have, if it counts, I loved. There is a small college group I'm hoping to join if they offer Saturday classes. I work at night so training at night is not an option. If anyone out there can help please drop me a line.
Thanks!
Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to AikiWeb.

Years ago, I was in your situation (minus the working at night...tough situation) years when our dojo was shut down.

I tried to compensate by finding time and reasons to be in cities where there were aikido dojo to train in.

I learned a lot and have a much broader perspective than I would have had I only trained at a single dojo.

I also made a lot of friends and connections. Given your situation, that would be important to you if you continue your training.

When I'm visiting the homeplace outside Nashville, I train at the Nashville Aikikai with Mary and Tom MacIntire Senseis.

They are very close to I-40 in downtown N-ville. When you can find the time, I highly recommend training with them.

Feel free to e-mail me if you think I can be of help. My e-mail is in my .sig below.

Best Regards,

Greg Jennings

Mike, welcome to AikiWeb, I am sure you will find it to be an informative source (and fun to participate in as well) for all things aiki. Have you already checked the dojo finder section? Try that, also try the aikido FAQ's site for dojo search http://www.aikidofaq.com/guide/index.html.

Mr. Jennings also gave you a good recommendation, and I find that personal recommendations are often the best.

Good luck on this, I hope you find yourself immersed in aikido practice soon.

Rachel

Hi Mike,

Sure, drop us an e-mail and we'll make sure you get a good work out.

Also, remember that you have an open ear here if you want to discuss how to do some aikido out in "aikido deserts".

Best Regards,

Greg Jennings

There is an AAA affiliate in Jackson. It is part way between Memphis and Nashville (more on the Memphis side).

I don't know the instructor.

Hi Mike:

I'd assumed that you knew about this as it is listed on the AikiWeb dojo finder:

----------------------------------

Dojo: Union University Aikido Club:

1050 Union University Drive; Jackson, TN 38305

Country: United States

Instructors: Antonio Chiareli

Phone: (901) 661-5399

Affiliation: AAA

Admin: [?] Last Updated: May 31st, 1999

----------------------------------

and they were the college group you mentioned in your original post.

If you do start training with them, please give them some hints that a web site would be nice.

Best Regards,

Greg Jennings
