Re: Sourcing Dojo Scrolls and Pics

The scrolls hanging in most dojos aren't the sort of thing that you buy on the internet. They're generally either gifts from teachers or students or custom made by professional calligraphers. (Sometimes both: professional-grade calligraphy is a common dojo fundraiser item.) If I were opening a dojo, I would ask my teacher what sources he would recommend.

Aikido Journal has some free resources and some which have a fee, as far as photos go. As for calligraphy, if you have a connection to high level teachers in Japan (as has been said) you can contact them. If not, there are some things for sale on Ebay.

Hiroshi Ikeda sensei usually sells some of his calligraphy at his seminars for quite reasonable prices.

Chris,

I believe you can reach Ikeda Sensei through this link

He has usually had some stock calligraphy available, and I also believe he still does custom pieces, although his travel schedule can cause delays. I will see him here in Orlando in a couple of weeks, so I can make further inquiry, if you wish.

As for photos, Stanley Pranin at Aikido Journal used to sell some pretty good portrait photos, but he has moved away from that sort of thing these days. He might yet have some remaining inventory, though, so you might still give him a try...

Yoshi Shibata Sensei, who teaches aikido at UC Santa Cruz, is a most excellent calligrapher and his rates are reasonable. https://m.facebook.com/Yoshihito-Shi...9323416509851/

Oriental Outpost is a good place also. They are in San Diego, California on University Ave. and most of the times they have the Aikido Kanji scrolls in stock. I got two large one that I bought from them that the calligraphy were written by the master calligrapher Imai Shihan. I am selling one of them and if you're interested please send me a PM.
