Dogen

I love the following quote by Dogen. Even though it was spoken in 13th century Japan to his own students, it still applies to those of us today that love to go see other teachers. (One more week until Saito sensei's seminar, can't wait!)

"When visiting a Zen master to seek instruction, listen to his teaching without trying to make it conform to your own self-centered viewpoint; otherwise you will be unable to understand what he is saying. Purifying your own body and mind, eyes and ears, simply listen to his teaching, expelling any other thought. Unify your body and mind and receive the master's teaching as if water were being poured from one vessel into another. If you do so, then for the first time you will be able to understand his teaching."

Ki Symbol Okay, one more

Okay, last one, I promise.

You must be shapeless, formless, like water. Now, if you put water into a
cup, it *becomes* the cup. You put water into a bottle, it *becomes* the
bottle. You put water into a teapot it *becomes* the teapot. Now water can
flow, and it can crash.

Be water, my friend.

Are you sure I did that right? I didn't feel a thing?

Just about every student has heard this from their Sensei at point. (generally while writhing in pain on the wrong end of Nikyo in my case)
