Aiki in a Kali Scrimmage?

Say folks,

I have been off this forum for a while. Just training and teaching these days. This last Saturday, one of my training partners was able to apply a pure aiki-jujitsu kote gaeshi in the third round of a double-stick contact kali bout. It was pure instinct (not to mention 4 years of breaking down and practicing the many principles involved).

It can be found on YouTubes at 3:36. see:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UE49g...eature=related

You may notice that Shawn (white/black helmet and white shin pads) got one of his stick disarmed and he had to close.

The context is that both players are veteran scrimagers who have won the Arnold Challenge Championships in Kali more than once.

Cudos to them both for their skills and energy in this fight. And thank you especially, Shawn, for this beautiful gift of an aiki throw in the heat of a double stick battle.

I am proud to call you a training partner, one of my kali teachers and student of the Aiki I teach.

Shawn is indeed an amazing athlete and human being. He is a lifestyle cyclist who runs long distances forwards, backwards and sideways doing Kali and Silat stick/blade patterns. A lover of all arts (tea, paint, sculpture, poetry, food, etc., he sees deeply and finds meaning in the spaces between the objects. He is an instinctive with a knife, having fished in Alaska for 14 years.

I would like to see him cycle long distances forwards, backwards and sideways doing Kali and Silat stick/blade patterns.

Seriously, it is great to see how the aikido application emerges under pressure . . . reflective of good training.

Thomas,

After doing taxes, I took a peek at my thread. You gave me a wild laugh.

Funny, though, Shawn has walked to work (5 miles each way) the last two days in an Ice Storm. He is indeed a unique fellow.
