Woods in Hawaii for jo

I was wondering in any Aikidoka in Hawaii have made their own bokken or jo ? I was wondering where can you get some nice wood from and what types of wood here are great for a jo. I was preferably wanting to get something from the Big Island if possible. Also I was thinking about koa but have heard some bad experiences with it.
