Letter of Thanks

At a recent seminar, the visiting Shihan was kind enough to give me a wonderful gift as a thank-you for organising some things for him and his wife. Unfortunately I was not able to see him when he left, and he gave the gift to another student to pass on to me.

I would like to write a letter of thanks, and want to do this in Japanese, in a style that is appropriate for an 80 yr old Japanese gentleman, who is a 9th Dan in Aikido and for whom I have enormous respect. Can anyone give me any advice on how to go about this as I have no idea what might be expected.

I am concerned that writing a letter in English and getting a standard translator to write the Japanese might not be the best way - they would probably just translate what I wrote, rather than rephrasing it in a way that is more appropriate for the circumstances.

Does anyone on this forum do translation as a career that could help me?

Many thanks for any advice or help!
