Re: tenkan in suwari waza

Tim:

You are most likely beginning your rotation too high. Most likely at the shoulders. The rotation should be a centripetal rotation in the spine at the hara level. Try that and see if that helps.

Onegaishimasu. Practicing tenkan in suwari waza helps us learn dropping the weight from our upper body (particularly the shoulders) like Marc said. I think this is one of the great benefits of practicing suwari waza.

In gassho,

Mark

Re: tenkan in suwari waza

i found that practicing this exercise from systema http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PO33I...eature=related helped my suwari stuffs. at least it helped me going from standing to suwari to standing smoothly. the main thing is to relax the upper body and let your hips doing the work. great for core conditioning.

Re: tenkan in suwari waza

I don't see how you could lose your balance if you keep your ankles/feet together...with head over shoulders, shoulders over hips. Maybe focusing on this will help? It'd help if you can post a short clip of what you are talking about...this might help us all to learn something as I am sure many people have problems with suwari waza (including me!). One training event my teacher made me do in kenshu class was to tie my feet together with some rope/obi.

Re: tenkan in suwari waza

I can see how some one can lose ballance. Especially if they are trying to turn with their top half, opposed to their center.

Re: tenkan in suwari waza

hey tim, how's charlie sensei and everyone?

like everyone above said. the 'turn' comes from your hips. don't try to 'stand up' on your knees. try to keep low and stay low

its a b_itch, isn't it?

practice hard

Great video Phi, got to work those hips! Looks like it would be very helpful, I'm going to try it myself. There are lots of references to systema on here, it's making me curious to try a class.
