Goto-ha Yagyu Shingan-ryu

Yawara
Bojutsu
Kenjutsu

Here is the martial art that Ueshiba Morihei studied for about 4 years, two times a week. Best information is that he mostly or only studied the taijutsu. There are power developing breathing methods associated with the higher level training, and the sword, in particular, is can be allegedly used for internal power development.
I do not believe that Ueshiba Morihei did so. There is no evidence that he learned much of YSR, and it is clear that Takeda Sokaku completely overwhelmed him when they met.
It is, however, a) a bit of history b) another example of HIPS There is/was a lot more to YSR than meets the eye.

Hi Ellis,
Did your informant mention what specifically was being trained in the sword form? Looking at it, the parts where the practitioners draw back the sword (seen at the end of each engagement, for ex. at :58) is interesting to me. It seems like an expression of spiraling power, similar to what is shown in the bojutsu clip here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWFvU...eature=related

I'm looking specifically at the movement of the practitioner on the left, at time 1:17 to 1:20.

Best,
Tim

tim - No, my informant didn't mention details. Our discussion was largely on generalities, and "this is what I've been told."

Best
Ellis

Best,

The guy on the left is not doing the same thing as the guy on the right; there is marked difference
Take a look at a couple of moves starting at 1:18; Guy on the left is generating power wth his arms and shoulders by snapping the bo; turning it over his forward hand and then dropping his weight same side hand and hip.
Watch the guy on the right and you might see some differences in what is moving that bo.....and what is moving his body, and how his hips are oriented after a power move.

Dan
Edit: Spiral motion, which happens a lot in martial arts, should not be confused with spiral energy
