Strong techniques. Good ukemi. Nice music.

I like the progressions shown on the tenchi nage and ganseki otoshi videos.

There is obviously some integration of judo here, but that's not a problem for me.

The irimi nage video was the only one that I didn't like. Many of the irimi nage were done in a very inefficient manner that I am not fond of (If you have someone's face in the ground, just put it in the ground).

Also, the harai goshi/o soto gari/ashi garuma/uchi mata type leg motion being used to displace the hips/block the leg seemed out of place sometimes, particularly in the tenchi nage (based on the body position, I think an agressive uke would have brought nage down at 0:42 of the tenchi nage video).

Is that you in the video, Bartek? If so, would you explain the application of this motion or what advantage you feel it gives you?

The techniques look strong. Nice videos.

What do you mean by strong techniques? Does that mean more than that you approved of the way the techniques were done?

1) why should there be music in an aikido video? I lways look at them with the loudspeakers off, so I even didn't know there WAS music before reading the comments...
2) Is this kata garuma and ganseki otoshi REALLY aikido? I never saw these, neither in my dojo nor in any seminar - and would a small and light person be able to do them with a strong and heavy one???

Is that because you are watching them at work?

I believe that the music is part of the demo.

Works very well against heavy ukes. It's regular Aikido (well, not Aikido TM, maybe).

Ganseki otoshi and kata guruma were key weapons in the aikido waza of Hiroshi Isoyama and Hirokazu Kobayashi, both students of Osensei, both 8th dan. Perhaps it can be assumed that they have some understanding of what is aikido. Isoyama says he developed his kata guruma throws precisely because in trying to do koshinage on much larger American uke, he had to find a way to prevent them from simply stepping around him and defeating the throw. Kata guruma became his answer. Kazuo Chiba, also 8th dan, also does/did kata guruma quite a bit, and he is rather small. The angles and energies involved make kata guruma a good option for a smaller man working against a large opponent who is rushing forward.

Oh yes, it is! It was nearly basics of the "old Aikido".

It is taught in Iwama Ryu to this day.
These are examples of the techniques which where abolished by the second doshu.

I never did it, but it seems to work very well. (Like said here before.)

It is an intent of Nage that define what is aikido technique and what is not. That how you draw this line

thanks for the clarifications. I didn't want to wisecrack and judge that these techniques were not aikido, I just had never seen them and I thought they were different...in fact I'd even LIKE to see them on the mat.

And yes, Dieter, CERTAINLY I look at these videos at work; where else should I do that ? But being an independent consultant, I don't have anyone around who'd bother what I do in my working time. Only I never, ever had the idea that an aikido video should be accompanied by music. But we never cease to learn.
