Meaning of -to?

Hey all,

just wondering about the meaning of the suffix -to, as in tanto, or bokuto?

Thanks,

Just another word for 'sword' as far as I know.

It is normally translated as "sword", but means anything with a blade. The kanji and the older chinese characters predating the kanji (tenji) show a bladed tool. Any sharp, cutting edge.
