aiki-taiso origin

i have been practicing aiki-taiso(or aiki exercise in our dojo) for few years now and i can see its benifts especially when i have trouble understanding a kata or technique i would just review my aiki-taiso and it helps ...But out of curiosity, i had been wondering about the origin of this exercises. i have read that it was bean popularize(if its the correct term) by Tohei sensie, but i also found out that its origin came from more religios backgraound which came from shinto religion. what confuse me is that what does some exercises like rolling, wrist locks and some stuf have to do with religion??..this kinda interest me to know the origin of this exercises..

tenx 4 any reponds!!
