Aikido on Discovery Channel
The Discovery Channel recently aired an episode of On The Inside named "Martial Arts: Way of the Warrior". It covered several martial arts of Japanese origin including Aikido and Karate. I was just wondering if anyone else got a chance to see it, and would like to comment on the Aikido portion (or any other part) of the program.
One of the segments was on Juko Kai "Combat Ki". http://www.jukokai.com/ It appeared to be very sensationalized and dangerous, but was backed up by very experienced practicioners such as Sherry McGregor http://www.mcgregorsmartialarts.com/ So, is this stuff for real or what?
I also didn't like the fact that they gave other martial arts more air time than Aikido! Shame on you Discovery Channel!
Thx,
Scott

KAMI : The teacher in the Aikido segment was KENSHO FURUYA Sensei. He's a very good teacher, even if I don't like his "girth" very much...
"Dr.", "Prof.", "Soke", Rod Sacharnoski, of JukoKai, is a man of many places and many sites. He has called himself by many names and his story is extremely shady and dubious.
There's a lot of information on those sites : http://204.95.207.136/vbulletin/show...5&pagenumber=1
also here,

Here,

and finally here (there are many other sites but perhaps those will suffice...),
http://204.95.207.136/vbulletin/show...?threadid=6916
He has quite a story, the Good Doctor does...

Keep your eye on the tv schedule, http://www.discovery.com The Discovery Channel always re-airs popular episodes of On The Inside. Its just a matter of time until they show it again.
Good Luck!

Hi, I'm a student at Furuya dojo, studying aikido and iaido. The bit on our dojo was fairly decent, although it's nearly impossible to capture anything but the smallest idea of what we do in our training. The best part was probably Sensei admonishing Jim about cleaning the mats .
Our dojo will be in another program on the Discovery Channel in April 2002, "Ultimate Ten Martial Arts" or some such. These things are usually a bit silly (combat ki? ninjas?), but oh well.
Our website has lots of Furuya Sensei's writings and things, if you're interested.

If you're ever in LA, please stop by!

Michael,
Thanks for the heads up on the upcomming show on Discovery. I enjoyed watching Furuya Sensei in action, and also hope this next MA program Discovery does is a little more comprehensive and not as "silly" as this one. That whole "Combat Ki" thing was a little over the top for me.
Is it just me, or is Dicovery Channel doing a lot of these Martial Arts Specials lately? These shows must get good ratings.

We had some fellows come up from Huntington Beach (~1.25 hours away) who had watched the program, and wanted to train at the dojo (long commute!). Sensei also mentioned he has received many emails about it, almost all positive, so I guess people like to watch these things.
I know I sent out a note to all my friends and family so they can see where I study .
