Dummies anyone??
I was just wondering, I am going to start using a grappling dummy for BJJ training at home, (its called the Grapple Man). Its really realistic, and the joints actually bend and give resistance almost like a real one supposedly. It has an option to make it stand up for tweaking standing grappling techniques and throws. i just wanted to ask what people think about using one of these to practice aikido technique when not at the dojo, and if theres actually anyone out there who does this, if they can give me their 2 cents about it. Also any tips are welcome..
Thanks...

Re: Dummies anyone??
My thougths. Grappling dummy's have limited use for BJJ. You can practice your top game, transitions etc all right, but no good for escapes, timing etc. I'd say they're even less limited in Aikido where the motion is everything. The only thing I can think it would be useful for is practicing transitioning hand positions from ikkyo->nikkyo->sankyo->yonkyo. Certainly don't purchase one thinking Aikido training will give you some of the value of the cost. If you're getting one for BJJ anyway then sure give it a go.
I think you'd be better off putting the money towards some mats for the garage and finding yourself a warm body. Other than that you'll get better bang for time for solo Aikido training out of doing weapons work.

Re: Dummies anyone??
This is the point where someone makes a crack about barbie and/or G.I. Joe. Even worse, in the japanese euphemism, a dutch wife...
Anyway, there are a limited number of aikido throws you could try, just as I imagine there would be a limited number of take-downs you could try using BJJ. Unfortunately my vocabulary for these kind of throws qualifies me as basically illiterate, in both discussion, and to approximately the same extent, execution.
how many months of practice would the cost of this training aid actually purchase, and then consider if you're not working with it as much as you could get on the floor, it might just better than it will actually be.
One the other hand, one hell of a conversation starter, as well as a party prop.

Re: Dummies anyone??
Not sure it is good at all.
Copying the same movement is not important. A technique has much more to it then the arm twisting. When you practice with a person, you learn not only about the particular technique you do, but much more about moving, human responses, timing, ranges and at perhaps higher levels openings and counters. Amd much more. Those things can not be learnt with a dummy ...

Re: Dummies anyone??
Does anyone have a link with info on this dummy that can be posted here?
I've never heard of a grappling dummy, though I've played with the idea of how one could work. Sounds interesting.

Re: Dummies anyone??
Found this by googling:
Grapple Man website
I like this passage from the website:
"If you're tired of looking for a training partner, or if you've injured others in training, consider Grapple Man. He is always available when you are available!"
(emphasis mine)
Maybe we should give a Grapple Man as an uke to those Aikidoka who are (in)famous for causing injury, hehehe

Re: Dummies anyone??
Does it come in female model?
How useful would it be if it would beep or signal when you perform a painful lock (like Nikkyu etc...)?

Re: Dummies anyone??
haha i thought that part about "if youve injured others in training" was funny too....theyre are some people who need it for that particular reason.....yeah, i understand that it wont be anything near as good as an actual partner, i was just thinking that it may be good for times when you dont have access to anybody to help you out.....That would be kind of cool if it would beep or something when you perform a painful lock...too bad i dont think theyre that advanced yet...i think the 2 best ones are the grapple man which already someone put up the website, and the other one is this dummy called bubba.....for that one the site is bubbadummy.com , theyre supposed to be coming out with a new one, dont know what modifications its gonna have though....

Yep, and while I think that's the case with grappling, for Aikido I think you'll find the falue pretty limited. Better to do a bunch of bokken cuts or some jo kata imo
