Misogi Breathing

Hello. I just started reading a book my Dad acquired years ago in Japan called AIKIDO IN DAILY LIFE by Koichi Tohei. In Chapter 4 Mr. Tohei introduces the Misogi breathing method, which is unclear to me when he discusses the inhalation part of it; that is, I'm not sure whether Mr. Tohei says to inhale air to the back of the head through the nose, or through the mouth. Can anyone answer this technical question for me?

It would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: Misogi Breathing

As far as I remember it, breath air in through the nose, while visualising the incoming breath ( as energy/ki ) to the back of the head, down the spine and into the 'one point' ( hara ).

You can try Shinichi Tohei's Ki Weblog (Tohei sensei's son).

You'll find a series of articles translating Koichi Tohei sensei's book, "Ki breathing (Ki no Kokyuho)".

(and breath in through the nose)

Re: Misogi Breathing

I have always been taught "In through the nose, out through the mouth" .

Re: Misogi Breathing

From O'Sensei's "The Art of Peace," translated by John Stevens, p. 21:

"Breathe in and let yourself soar to the ends of the universe; breath out and let the cosmos back inside. Next, breathe up all the fecundity and vibrancy of the earth. Finally, blend the breath of heaven and the breath of earth with that of your own, becoming the Breath of Life itself."

Every simple breath is misogi. Air with oxygen comes in with each inhale and is filtered by the lungs. With each exhale, the toxins in our breath are released. I view this profound misogi as evidence of God.
