nikkyu, nikyu? What is it?
Well, another languagequestion.
Is it Nikkyu or nikyu or nikkyo and ikkyu or ikyu or ikkyo and why?
Google gives hits on all of them.
Thanks for helping me out.

Re: nikkyu, nikyu? What is it?
Hi Arjan,
I don't think you can answer this without the characters, but undoubtedly Goldsbury Sensei will be able to this month at class.
My little knowledge says that the root of kyo is connected to thread , logic, law, or teaching. So Ikkyo is first teaching or first thread towards understanding.
Kyu, as far as I know, means boy, or someone not yet grown up and you grow up towards being a beginner, Shodan, before that you have not started.

Re: nikkyu, nikyu? What is it?
Hi Alec (and others),
Maybe I should explain more.
I am trying to make a examinationcard for my members.
On this I have 1st kyu etc.
Under each kyu I would like to put the name of the degree.
So 1st kyu = well that is the question: ikkyo, ikyo, ikkyu, ikyo.
Maybe this is more simple to answer, maybe not!
See you in Nunspeet next week.

Re: nikkyu, nikyu? What is it?
Hello Arjan,
It seems that you are confusing two similar sounding terms:
Ikkyo is the name of a technique (meaning the first teaching). It is a composite word. "Ichi" meaning one, is contracted when put together with "kyo" meaning teaching, thereby making ikkyo. (The "o "vowel sound is prolonged, but I can't write that on my computer!).
Ikkyu means the first level, as in a student's rank. This is created from the word "ichi", and when put together with the word "kyu" meaning student level, it becomes "ikkyu" (the same as before: the u vowel sound should be elongated). As you probably know, since the student levels start low and go upwards it is the last level before Shodan.
I hope this clarifies things for you.
In Aiki,
Ethan Weisgard

Re: nikkyu, nikyu? What is it?
Arjan,
to complete Ethan's reply:
ichi + kyu (1st kyu) goes to ik-kyu or ikkyu, the k is doubled
ni+ kyu (2nd kyu) goes ni-kyu or nikyu, no need for doubling anything
Regards Dirk

Hello Arjan,
I think I will be able to explain this when we meet at Alec's dojo. But ikkyou 一教 and ikkyuu 一級 are quite different.
Best wishes,

Hello Peter Sensei,
I know. I was hesitating between ikkyu and ikyu and nikkyu and nikyu. I hope you can shine your light on this.
I am looking forward meeting you in Alecs dojo (just got of the phone with him chatting about the future!), we can chat about this.
Greetings,
Arjan
