"The Power of Nightmares" - UK TV series

I've seen trailers for what looks like it'll be a very interesting series of 3 one hour programmes on BBC2. (I don't suppose it'll be accessible to American viewers, but hopefully a lot of the content will be put on the web - the Beeb are pretty good about doing that, their website is *huge*.)

In another thread, whilst getting all political, I made a point about how I think Americans are living in fear. (And to an extent, so are we Brits, the rest of Europe, in fact just about everybody. But not like the Americans, they're just out there maan.... )

I think it'll be very interesting for anyone who's been following the "anti-americanism" thread, and the others like it.

Starts tomorrow (Wednesday), on BBC2 at 9pm. (And if, as I hope, they put a lot of the material up on their website, I'll post again with a link.)

Let's see: "The Phantom Victory: Series exploring the idea that the threat of a terror network is a myth. American Neoconservatives and Radical Islamists come together to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan." -- BBC web site.

Ah well, I was expecting something to do with real nightmares and dreams... Not yet another political doc-thriller a la Moore.

The people who understand, understand prefectly.

Re: "The Power of Nightmares" - UK TV series

Just Watched the above pro gramme. It was eye opening and showed some surprising things. What sticks in my mind is the film of Donald Rumsfelt back in the early 80's arguing that the 'Russians' had hidden military capabilities - and that they were an imminent threat. Of Course back then things were different as you had an entire examination and the proposition was supported by the fact that there was no evidence whatsoever to support it. On second thoughts it you substitute the word Saddam for 'the Russians' you have a carbon copy of the WMD arguments used.

It's seems the underlying philosophy is that America must believe it has a moral purpose and that can be established by spreading black propaganda against anyone the regime doesn't like and then invading them without any evidence or justification to support it in order to rally the country.

It's frighting how clearly successful the supporters of this philosophy have become.
