Re: test cutting? what are your thoughts?
My dojos are part of the US Federation of Batto Do. (This is the American arm of the Zen Nihon Batto Do Renmei). We do the Seitei Kata and tameshigiri more or less of Toyama ryu.
I have found that my students who have practiced tameshigiri (we do it maybe 2 times a month) have a better understanding of mai ai with a sword and their cuts tend to have better "intent".
IMHO, I don't think it is necessarily integral to aikiken, but it will sharpen your angles, make you quicker, more relaxed, and you will have a better feel for what you are trying to accomplish with a sword.
And anyway, cutting is a blast!!
