test cutting? what are your thoughts?

what are your thoughts regarding training with sharp steel by test cutting (And thrusting)?
Does it help understanding what a japanese sword is capable (and not capable) of doing?
Should it be any part of aiki ken training? (or is it? I'm just wondering...forgive me newbie thread ideas)

Re: test cutting? what are your thoughts?

Test cutting is fun, and I think anyone who uses a sword should try it from time to time.

Is it essential? IMHO, nope.

Is it helpful? Yep.

Should it be part of aikiken training? Hmm. Good question.

It'd probably inform your practice a great deal, if you can find someone to teach you (cutting is really sort of a seperate skillset in sword work) but if you never cut anything, you'll never really miss it, especially in the aikiken paradigm.

Re: test cutting? what are your thoughts?

My dojos are part of the US Federation of Batto Do. (This is the American arm of the Zen Nihon Batto Do Renmei). We do the Seitei Kata and tameshigiri more or less of Toyama ryu.

I have found that my students who have practiced tameshigiri (we do it maybe 2 times a month) have a better understanding of mai ai with a sword and their cuts tend to have better "intent".

IMHO, I don't think it is necessarily integral to aikiken, but it will sharpen your angles, make you quicker, more relaxed, and you will have a better feel for what you are trying to accomplish with a sword.

And anyway, cutting is a blast!!
