Agreed. It's always enjoyable seeing Himself in action when he was in his prime. Too bad his Hollywood career got in the way.

Re: Video: Steven Seagal on Merv Griffin Show
Thanks Jun.
I actually have a black and white version with Star Wars music dubbed over it (?) that I found on you tube. It was also only a portion of the demo.
Really takes me back to the excitement I felt when I first saw Aikido performed by Seagal sensei.
He was really great.

Re: Video: Steven Seagal on Merv Griffin Show
Peace Nafis.
Hope all is well.
Matsuoka Sensei seems to have moved away from that 'style' of aikido. I got a chance to train at Ikazuchi not too long ago...very nice people.
There are a few students who Seagal Sensei endorses and that have carried on that 'style' (I hate to use the word style but you know what I mean).

He is no longer a student of Seagal.
From his association website: "In August, 2001, Reynosa Sensei felt that he had gained all that he could from Seagal Sensei and left his side. Reynosa Sensei had become Seagal's highest ranking student (Godan) and had produced all but two seminars around the world with him. Reynosa Sensei often speaks of still being inspired by Seagal's teaching from this period of time and reminds us that he will be eternally grateful to Seagal for his time with him."
Our dojo is affiliated with him and my instructor is his student of 12 years. Reynosa was just at our dojo a few weekends ago for a seminar. It was excellent! Actually, it quite funny about that video Jun posted...some of those very same techniques we did, and with the same vigor. I hurt for a solid week!

Re: Video: Steven Seagal on Merv Griffin Show
No one has really looked at the other post on Seagal video's, so I'll put it here as well. This is from the 80's on a TV show that aired in Los Angeles. I think this one is really great too:

Who do you think the aikido master was that Seagal referred to which he saw at a football halftime event when he was around six and inspired him to practice aikido?
I know Shioda made an appearance in Detroit in the early days but I'm not sure of the year it was or if he did any demo at a football halftime event. Some video I saw of Shioda in Detroit at that time appeared to be in a basketball gym or something.

Re: Video: Steven Seagal on Merv Griffin Show
Hey James,
That's who I was thinking of as well. I think it may have been Shioda sensei. I'm also certain, that if it was, it would have been one heck of a demo. Very fast and very powerful. I'd get excited too!
It's cool seeing a very young Matsuoka sensei in the video as well. Amazing ukemi. To be able to take full power throws and take downs from Seagal sensei, wow!
I was thrown once by Seagal sensei at a seminar he co-instructed with Abe sensei in 1991 at Occidental College. Jarred me a bit. Very strong Aikido. Smooth but strong.

Re: Video: Steven Seagal on Merv Griffin Show
I love watching Seagal's aikido too. That particular version of iriminage I think can be powerful (as we can see), but I think Uke makes the technique. If a person did not know how to properly fall from that, a person probably would probably not fall but have a broken neck.
Elliot Freeman Sensei came to our dojo about 5 years ago and did that version of irimi nage many times (with his Uke's) and you really need to know how to take ukemi properly.
I personally think there are other versions of irimi nage that are much more flowing and probably end up working better.

Re: Video: Steven Seagal on Merv Griffin Show
Well, I enjoyed both of the videos I did watch. That last one was funny.
It's easy to forget with all the nonsense about his personal life that Segal was and is a very good Aikidoist.

I agree. And it doesn't go without saying. Thanks for saying it.
In my own world, whatever that might be, being inspired by and grateful to a person often includes taking a poke at 'em on the humor train. In fact, it is customary among many native traditions to do so as a form of respect and love. It is with that sensibility that I tend to offer. Just so ya know. I am grateful to Segal. He has given me a reference point almost all of my teenage students can relate to.
I recently did some training with Fujitani Sensei and Kentarou Segal. They were very gracious. Fujitani Sensei has very strong and very classical Aikido and I woud recommend training with her given the opportunity. Kentarou is a very tall, very brooding looking guy who has the softest voice I've ever heard. He was kind enough to( well, Fujitani Sensei told him to ) take all the ukemi that day. There were children in the dojo; laughing and sitting on the edge of the mat. And one little tyke was doing the warmups along with Sensei.Beautimus, as they say.
Training with Kentarou, more specifically,iIntercepting for Shomen Gokyu was like flagging a low flying plane. Geronimo!!!!!! I hope to be Uke next time.

Re: Video: Steven Seagal on Merv Griffin Show
Dont know, seems like Seagal is a house hold name.
Not that I will ever be a household name.
He seemed out of breath from the get-go.
Just watched Christian Tissiers Bercy vid - now that is cool.
Was Steven ever in this shape? (guess I should be fair, Steven did mention in his vid that he was out of shape and was trying to loose weight or something.)
Anyway...
Peace
