Drunken-master Aikido
So, is it just me or does anyone else get a hoot from training early in the morning the day after a particularly long night out drinking?
You know, when you're still drunk as hell and you are sweating the stuff out into your gi, your eyes refuse to focus, and ukemi seem like a really bad idea....?
Not that I'm advocating stepping onto the mat blind drunk, of course, otherwise we all know the aiki kami will strike you dead.
No, more of an informal training session with friends.
Am I alone on this?

Re: Drunken-master Aikido
if the saying one fights the way one trains is valid i would assume one should also train the way one fights... if you are likely to use your aikido in a bar fight ie while drinking, it would make sense to practice drunken master aikido...LOL

Re: Drunken-master Aikido
Totally alone ... LOL
The closest I get is training on sleep depravation twice a week. I work until 11:00 PM every night and the only two classes my dojo offers that I can attend are at 6:30 AM on Tuesday and Thursday.
So I get home, in bed and asleep around 1:00 AM to have the alarm go off at 5:30 AM so I can be on the mat for class at 6:30 AM.
The things we do to train.

Heh!
Well, Drunken-master Aikido saved my life. Well, either it's quite possible is was either the alcohol or the aikido, maybe not both.
Many years ago (when I was less responsible and mature than the paragon of virtue I am today) I was returning home, by bus, from a night of training and consequent after-training drinking. Let's just say that I was rather judgement-impaired and leave it at that.
Well, my particular stop was not well-lit. So when the bus opened the door to let me out I did not notice it had not stopped.
So, blithely unaware of how newtonian physics was about to rudely intersect my world, I stepped off...
...and hit the ground with a sideways velocity sufficient to bowl me over. Luckily, about 3 or 4 mae ukemi later, I was back on my feet and wondering what the bloody hell just happened. Not even a scratch.
And the expressions on the faces of the people at the window of the bus were priceless!
Moral of the story: alcohol + = practical step for self-preservation.

It is very hard on your inner organs when you train any time with alcohol in your system. As you get older, yiou will understand that this is a grave situation indeed.

And you should be even more concerned about the toll it takes on your OUTER organs...

Few drinks at the pub: 15 pounds
Vindaloo curry plus lager: 30 pounds.
Nightclub entrance and drinks: 40 pounds
Taxi at 4am to go home: 5 pounds.
Being uke for sensei who is showing kotegaeshi all morning: priceless
There are some things money can buy, for everything else there are sadistic sensei.

I used to do kung fu drunk...these days I like to stay high and dry to avoid contests. Before you know it were all taking breakfalls onto moving cars or something.

Re: Drunken-master Aikido
My dojo offers classes at 10:00am Sunday mornings. Since I have to bus there, I have to be up by about 8:30. Now, I've been trying to cut down on saturday night excursions because of this, but they still happen. Going to bed at 4 after a night of drinking and waking up less than 5 hours later I feel very, very tired. Luckily most of this exhaustion lifts once I get on the mats and get the blood flowing. However, As soon as class is over it hits me hard.
I've gotta get in the habit of making saturday nights a little more subdued.

Lyle, does this mean you want to stay 'high' .... and 'dry'
or more innocently 'high and dry' to avoid contests?

Re: Drunken-master Aikido
I have never hit the mats while under the influence, however I used to tear apart the living room with my bjj mates after a big night, I wont begin to explain the clean up. Sometimes I am a little off colour when I train ( I like to drink alot) but my belief is if you train focused and reasonably sober, your reflexes in a drunken situation should be much sharper. IMO.

Before you drive or steer your vehicle, you must first start the engine, release the brake and find gear!
