Article: How One Aikido Sensei Changed My Life

Posted 2016-01-05 00:29:31 by Jun Akiyama
News URL: http://observer.com/2016/01/how-one-...-life-lessons/

Here's a lovely article written by Ted Gonder entitled "How One Aikido Sensei Changed My Life (and 17 of His Life Lessons)" on his experiences with Don Levine (4th dan) who passed away in April, 2015.

From the article: To get good at aikido, you have to practice the techniques so much that they become automatic, reflex. But technical proficiency doesn't make a great aikidoist. Great aikido comes from the the transcendence of technique: to move freely and masterfully, one must forget what's been learned. Don would repeat aikido's founder: "Any movement, intact, can become an Aikido technique, so in ultimate terms, there are no mistakes. My advice to you: Learn and forget! Learn and forget! Make the techniques part of your being!"

Re: Article: How One Aikido Sensei Changed My Life

This article was fantastic. It reminds me that aikido is not an abstract concept, but a reality that remains alive because of the transmission of wisdom from teacher to student (and back again).

Thanks for sharing Jun.

Re: 2016 Kagami Biraki Promotions Announced

Don Sensei was an inspiration to many. He founded an organization to continue his work in taking Aikido principles out of the dojo and into the world. You can learn more at www.aikiextensions.org
