Bokken

Today, I got a new red oak bokken for ...... US$ 8.75 (it even seems to be good quality!) However, I have a few questions. Is there anything I should do to it before a) shipping it across the country and b) using it? Also, what would be the best way to ship it across the US?
Thanks and Happy Holidays

Jessica

I am sorry to disappoint you, but a good bokken for 8.75 does not exist. Anything less than 20$ will be dangerous for you and your partners to use. Price alone is not a quality guarantee, but it's an indicator.

Generally speaking, I think that's pretty accurate. I also tend to stay away from anything in red oak since most of those weapons tend to splinter and break fairly easily.

On the other hand, a lot depends on how you train where you are. Some folks train with a lot of contact between weapons - in which case you should have something sturdy, and some folks train with little or no contact between weapons - in which case cheaper is often better.

Best,

Chris

Relax! I do not intend to use this bokken in partner practice. It is for a theater production that I am in. But I need to ship it across the country in two days!!! Help, please!

Thanks
