Aikido against real knife
Hello everyone. I'm practicing Aikido (Steven Seagal's style) for many years. Also i'm a knife defence and aikido instructor in police in California. So i wanna show you couple videos to show that Aikido is a great and powerful self - defence martial art.
1) First video is fast hand movements - http://youtu.be/tlCGf_AhVl8
it's looks like win chun, but it's my variant punching in Aikido!
2) Second is Aikido against real knife - http://youtu.be/MxfHfaWoWgc

Re: Aikido against real knife
hmmm... that was not convincing from my point of view. No commitment what so ever in that knife attack. Get a shock knife and try again with a committed opponent or heck do it with a nice red marker.

Give the guy a chance ... it's his first post ... and not so bad I think. What more does he have ... might be some good stuff.

Re: Aikido against real knife
typical example of using 'do' in fight (where 'jitsu' is required).
Too much technique...
oh sorry first post.
Read into 'do' and 'jitsu'. Understand difference between study (do) and fight (jitsu).
|
In a real fight:
* If you make a bad decision, you die.
* If you don't decide anything, you die.
Aikido teaches you how to decide.

Dear Stephen,
W ho flaps a knife around like the vid shows?Answer no one. I see no real intent from the knife wielder therefore the defence shown how ever well meaning has no validity or of practical value. However at least the guy defending is making an effort.I would say he needs to go back to the drawing board.Joe.

Re: Aikido against real knife
Queue dozens of "your martial art training is no good against real life knife attack" videos, which themselves do not actually address the real issue, which is that if somebody is serious about wanting to kill you with a knife, you will never see the knife, and you probably won't ever see them.

Not bad. Way better than the clips he posted in OP.

Flap, flap, flap ... pause ... here's a 1970's gift of straight arm.
Absolute crud.
We did more realistic stuff with sticks when we were ten!
Mind you, getting gov't money for teaching this awfulness is a real art!
Good on yer!

Re: Aikido against real knife
I watched the vid again. I was attacked by a kid with a knife as a teenager before I even started Aikido. I say kind of becuase there was a lot of waving about of the knife - but no real intention. And I have seen a couple instances since. Each time the agressor was showing off, waving it about. I don't think they were that serious in that nothing serious happened. In fact, had the 'victim' tried to do something it might have 'stimulated' an auto-response kind of attack -- like when a dog chases he who starts to run for no other reason than to chase because the chase is on. They did nothing and nothing happened. In my case, a friend stepped in front of me and out-stared the idiot - a confidence trick or sorts I guess. I was shocked by my friend's sudden rush to my defence because even at that young age I could tell the kid was not really serious. But he was waving his knife about menacingly. An old guy also came over and yelled at the kid. No fighting happened ... but sometimes ... your own rush to act can actually be the cause of what 'happens'.

Re: Aikido against real knife
Empty hand vs. knife looks way less fancy when you throw in a resisting, committed attacker. I've practiced Kali for over 12 years, and successful defense against a knife attack is always rather brutal and ugly.
